History of Fireworks

When the art of making fireworks originated is not definitely known. Most authorities believe it was the Chinese who first produced fireworks. Their records show that such displays were produced by them centuries before they appeared in Western nations. The ancient Greeks made explosives of some kind which had been called "Greek fire." The Roman Emperors sometimes amused the people with colored lights and "fire fountains."

However, fireworks were not made in European countries to any extent until after gunpowder came into use and the science of chemistry had developed. There is a record of a fireworks display being part of a 16th century pageant. The Italians picked up the art and produced quite elaborate fireworks during the 17th and 18th centuries.
